AP sources: Senate Group Omits Employer Mandate, Public Option
Well, that's just great, isn't it?
I understand that purple state Democrats are striving to maintain political viability by developing moderate reputations. Voting against key aspects of the Democratic party's legislative agenda, however, won't keep these vulnerable Democrats safe because they make the party appear ineffective, unfocused, and just plain lame.
When the national conversation is pivoting from "gee, the Republican party is in such disarray" to "Democrats can't even pass their agenda with once-in-a-lifetime majorities," Democrats will lose big. When it comes time for re-election, not many in the party will be enthusiastic about supporting these candidates, even with the threat of a formidable GOP challenger.
Let's face it: when the party appears incompetent, the "moderates" will be the first to lose their seats (see: Sununu, John).
